Music clef and heart on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wearing a white tank top with turquoise trim is photographed from behind, with her dark hair in a ponytail. A small black tattoo sits on her upper back near the spine, combining a curled bass clef style symbol with a heart outline and two dots. The linework is solid and simple, with no visible shading, and the composition is a close view of the back against a blurred green outdoor background.

Harrow had the organ open on two trestles in the back of the dodgems shed when the rain started, and Mick Doyle was still bent over the bass pipes swearing at a split bellows. Nobody else would touch the thing. It had come up from Kent in a removal van with a tarpaulin over its carvings, its painted saints gone grey at the edges, and it was due on the Downs by Saturday for the Whit fair.

Under the lid, on the card roll that fed the keys, someone had punched a row of holes in the shape of a heart, then a curl like a bass clef, then two dots that the paper rolled past every bar. Mick had asked the old owner about it. The old owner had shrugged and said his wife had cut the last roll herself, the year before she went into hospital, and that nobody was to play the tune under it unless they meant it.
Mick found the tune on the roll the way you find a cough in a chest: by listening. It was a waltz, slow, with the bass line low enough to rattle the caravan windows across the field. He put the bellows back, stitched the leather, and let the organ breathe once in the empty shed.
On Saturday the fair opened at noon. At dusk, when the lights came on and the crowd thinned to lovers and drunks, Mick wound the handle and the heart-shaped holes went past the reader one after another, and the waltz came out thick and sweet and slightly out of tune, the way she must have liked it.
