Small peace sign tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person is seen from behind with a long braided plait woven with yellow daisies lying over one shoulder. A small, simple black peace sign tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, drawn with clean, uniform linework and no shading. The warm, soft-focus outdoor setting shows green foliage behind, and the person wears a tie-dye bandeau top.

The lock gate jammed halfway up, and I had to climb the beam with my plait down my back and a fistful of daisies I'd picked off the towpath for Mrs Ruddock's honey stall. Below me the Kingfisher sat low in the water, her rear doors still tacky where Dad had dabbed the white symbol on with a sable brush the night before. He said it would keep the weather off. Mum said it would keep the lock-keepers talking, and it did.

We had been on the cut since April, three hundred miles of brick bridges and sleeping willows, and every morning I wove flowers into my hair for no reason except that Mum liked the look of it. The Ruddock girls on the bank called me the dandelion queen. I didn't mind. At Hollin Lock they'd sold their honey to anyone who stopped, and a man in a grey suit once paid four shillings for a jar and asked me whether my father was a Communist. I said he was a painter, which was nearly true.

The gate shifted with a groan, and I pulled the paddle the way Dad had shown me, though my arms shook. The water roared through and the Kingfisher lifted, slow as a sleeping cow. Dad was on the roof, squinting at me through the spray, and he gave me the thumbs up with the hand that wasn't holding the windlass.

Later, when the lock was empty and the sun had dropped behind the poplars, I tipped my braid over the side and watched the daisies loosen and drift off down the cut, bobbing after us like a small yellow crew that refused to be left behind.
