He went up to the rail with a tin pail of cold tea and the look of a man about to be sick. Did anyone know the one about the drowned fisherman's daughter, he asked. Nobody did. So he sang the only song he trusted, a wedding tune his grandmother had hummed over the stove in Tripoli, and the mate laughed, then stopped laughing, then started humming too.

A mile off, a fishing boat answered with its horn, once and then twice, keeping to the rhythm of the tune. Nikos grinned and said nothing, but he tapped the rail with two fingers, the way he always did when the bread came out right.
The tow arrived before midnight. Nobody mentioned the singing afterwards except the purser, who wrote in the log that the engine had been repaired, the weather fair, and the cook had sung. Nikos never argued the point. He said music had got him across more water than any saint, and he went back to his peelers without a word of thanks to anyone.
