Small cross tattoo on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple cross is drawn in thin black ink on the inner forearm, near the wrist. The linework is single and even, with little or no shading, and the cross is set slightly diagonally in the centre of the frame. The skin is a warm tone, with a dark woven bracelet and silver charm beads crossing the wrist and a blurred green and white background behind.

Sit yourself down by the stove and mind the kettle, because this is the long road round and I'm not telling it short. Your grandfather's boat, the Dorothy Ann, came up the Trent one March with a cross chalked on her bow. Not painted. Chalk, the sort the lock-keepers use for the numbers on the gate beams, and fresh enough to smudge under a thumb. He thought some lad had been larking about, so he went for it with a wet rag, and the old woman on the lock side called out to leave it be.

Her name was Nell Harrod, and her boy had gone under at Cromwell lock the winter before, off the top gate, in the dark, with nobody to see it. Every evening after that she walked the towpath with a stick of chalk in her apron pocket and marked the first boat through, low down where a lad's hand would find it. She said the lock would take a boat's word over a man's, and a boat that carried a mark would slow its engine and look twice at the water.
Your grandfather didn't wash it off after all. He took the Dorothy Ann through slow that spring, and every spring after, and the cross came back on her bow each time the rain had taken it. The lock lads started calling it Nell's Mark, then just the Mark, and nobody on that stretch has gone under since. Mind, I'm not saying it was the chalk. I'm saying the water listened. Now pass me that cup, and keep your fingers out of the stove.
