Heart padlock and key tattoos on arms

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms cross in the frame, one bearing a large heart-shaped padlock with filigree scrollwork and a keyhole at its centre. The second arm has a smaller key with a decorative, lace-like bow and shaft. Both designs use bold black outlines with grey shading and a plain light background.

The gate at the bottom of Halloran's garden has been shut since the winter the wisteria split its post, and nobody in Wrenfield can tell you why its padlock is shaped like a heart. You turn it over in your palm the afternoon the rain stops, feeling the cold iron scrolls under your thumb, and wonder whether the man who made it was in love or simply vain.

Tucked under the shackle is a folded note in faded ink. It says the key is where the roses forgive. For three days you kneel in the beds, pulling bindweed from between the bricks until your fingers are green to the knuckle. Mrs Achterberg from the post office brings a flask of tea and tells you the roses were his wife's, and that she never once locked the gate against anyone, not even the tinkers who came asking for work.

On the fourth morning the key turns up in the hollow of a stone urn, bronze and lace-like at the bow, its teeth worn smooth. It fits, but the heart won't give. You coax the mechanism with a hairpin until it springs open with a sound like a breath let go, and the gate swings onto a lawn gone silver with dew, and a bench facing the house where someone has left a lamp burning.

You sit down beside it. The glass is still warm. You leave the gate open behind you for the first time in forty years, and the wisteria, freed at last, lets fall a single pale blossom into your lap.
