Musical staff tattoo across fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with a tattoo of a musical staff and several notes running across the fingers and the back of one hand. The linework is thin and precise, with the staff lines and note heads rendered in fine black ink. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus on the blurred background and a dark vignette at the right edge.

The vestry smelt of damp hymnbooks and the gas fire that never quite warmed the chair. Outside, the lamplighter on Chapel Row was already late.

She had asked him for one thing only: copy the tenor line out clean before the choir went north for the festival, because the original was in pieces and held together with sellotape and a cough sweet. He copied it. Each note sat on its stave like a small black bird on a wire, and he kept his hand light while the ink dried, pressing his fingers flat on the page so it would not smudge.
On the last night she came down the vestry steps with her coat half on and took the sheet from him without looking. She hummed the phrase once, badly, then again properly, and the whole row of notes seemed to lift off the paper into the cold air. "You've put the sharp in the wrong place," she said, and handed it back. When he checked, she was right, and he was glad of it, because it meant the melody had finally found its way into his hand.
