Matching swirl wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of two hands held together, with a small matching flourish tattoo on each wrist. The tattoos are drawn in thin, flowing black linework with curling loops and tapered strokes. The soft focus background and shallow depth of field keep attention on the wrists and clasped fingers.

Dear Ilse,

The man in the glass booth at Vrelo turned my papers over three times before he looked at what I had pushed under the window. It was only the small swirl Grandmother drew on the back of an envelope the summer we were nine, the one she said was the letter L going the long way round. He asked what it meant. I told him it was a word we were not allowed to say at the table.

He laughed, stamped the page and waved the queue on. I have been standing on this strip of gravel for two hours with your last letter folded in my coat, reading the sentence you wrote in March: that the loops only close when both wrists are held together. I have been holding my hand against my chest like a bird I am not sure will fly.

The lorries are grinding up the hill behind me now. Across the fence there is a yellow sign and a woman in a red scarf who looks exactly like Grandmother's sister, and she is waving at someone I cannot see. I think it is you.

I am going to walk through. Keep your hand out of your pocket, because I will lift mine first, the way we practised by the orchard wall, and when the barrier rises I will know the ink has gone where it should.

Yours, the long way round, Lena
