My Sisters script and heart tattoos on matching feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three bare feet rest together on a dark wooden floor, with denim cuffs and a light denim sleeve at the top of the frame. Each foot carries a thin black script tattoo reading My Sisters, joined to a small outlined heart at the start of the word. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the photo is in natural colour with the black ink standing out against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth, the tide has taken the lower steps of the Gravesend stair again, so I am writing this on the top landing with my boots in a puddle and the lamp turned down to save the cell. You will say I should have sent it by gull post. The gulls lost my last three letters, so this goes in the tin instead, and I am trusting the river to be kinder than the birds.

Do you remember the boat shed the winter Mum's ink ran out? We sat on the cold boards with our feet pushed together, arguing over whose toes were uglier, and you held Nan's darning needle over the lamp until the tip went red. I still cannot believe the words came out so straight. You said a heart was too much for a shed, and I said the shed was already too much, so we would have both. The loop of the heart never quite closed. You laughed and said that was the only honest part.

The tin is for whoever comes next. Tobias from the pump house found it last week in the mud, and he has been carrying it about like a dog with a stick. He thinks the words are a spell for keeping the water down. I told him they are only a promise, which is harder to keep than any spell, and he looked at me as if I had said something foolish about the weather. He has scratched his own name under ours on the lid. I let him.

If the sea finally takes the stair, know that the ink outlasted the boat shed, the lamp, and most of Mum's clothes. Come and find me if you can. Bring the needle. We will do it properly this time, with a heart that closes at the top. Yours, always, the one with the crooked loop.
