Two hands with matching black lettering reading 5:1:13 on the ring fingers, in a fine, typewriter-style font.

Matching number tattoos on ring fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown close together, each ring finger carrying the same short line of black text reading 5:1:13. The lettering is crisp and evenly spaced, with clean solid outlines and light grey shading in the strokes. The ink is set against natural skin tones on a plain, softly blurred background, with the figures placed to draw the eye to the two designs.

The hall smells the way it always did, of floor polish and radiator dust, and the name badges are still stuck to the tables with masking tape. You find his name first, which you did not mean to do. Someone has written Tom in capitals and then, underneath in a smaller hand, Locker 13.

You remember the combination without wanting to. Five left, one right, thirteen left. Your fingers knew it before your head did, the way they knew the stairs in the science block in the dark. In fourth year the lock on 13 stuck every morning, and he would stand there with his bag on one shoulder, spinning the dial and swearing softly until the metal gave. You told him it was bad luck. He told you luck was just a dial you hadn't turned properly.

Across the room he is holding a plastic cup of squash and laughing at something. He sees you and lifts it an inch, the way you might salute a stranger. Then he crosses over, and you talk about wives, mortgages, a boat he never bought. Neither of you mentions the ink. It was a lark, the summer after exams, a needle in a shop above a chippy, two numbers and a joke nobody else would get.

Near the end of the night he takes you down the corridor. Locker 13 is still there, dented, its paint gone the colour of weak tea. He spins the dial without thinking, five, one, thirteen, and the door swings open onto a single paperback with a bent spine and a note in your handwriting: Same time next year. You don't know whether to laugh or cry, so you do the sensible thing and read it aloud.
