Two pairs of feet show matching fine line black tattoos of a heart on a heartbeat line with the word Sisters, placed near the ankle.

Sisters heartbeat tattoos on feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two pairs of bare feet rest on a dark wooden floor beside denim and light fabric. Each foot carries a thin black outline of a heart joined to a heartbeat line that runs into the word Sisters in script. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the neutral skin tones and dark floor keep the focus on the tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth kept the seismograph drum at the old observatory on the headland, and every evening she changed the inked paper and read the wavering line for her sister, who was out at sea. Ina had sailed in October on the Mary Jane with two cousins and a crate of paraffin lamps, and the needle had jumped hard the night the wind came round to the north-east, then settled again before dawn.

When the boat finally came in, Ina walked up the slipway barefoot because her boots had filled with brine and she could not be bothered to bail them. Ruth met her at the bottom of the steps with a jar of warm tallow balm and a biro. "Hold still," she said, and drew a small heart on the top of Ina's foot, then a spike of a line running out from it, exactly like the trace on the drum. The word came last, SISTERS, in the careful copperplate Miss Hannah had beaten into them at the village school.

"That's a biro mark," Ina said. "It'll be gone by Sunday."

"Then we'll have it done properly in Penzance, the pair of us, before the boat goes out again." Ruth drew the same mark on her own foot, and her hand shook so the S came out lopsided, which Ina said was only fitting.

That winter they kept the marks alive with fresh biro every Sunday, and the needle on the drum lay flat through the spring. Ruth stopped checking it twice a night. Some evenings they sat on the kitchen floor with their feet pressed together under the table, two small hearts side by side, and neither of them said which one had been counting.
