Outline whale with red heart
Other · Mixed · Photo
A simple cartoon whale is drawn in a single black outline, with a small round eye and a curved smile line near the head. A solid red heart sits in the body, and the rest of the design is unshaded skin. The composition is centred on the whale with a plain background.

The sign painter's tin of red lake had dried to a crust since spring, so you thinned it with linseed and knelt in the sawdust behind the ticket booth. Mr Dunmore had sold the pennants in March and the ponies in April, and now there was only the whale, a wooden thing on iron wheels that the children used to climb every Saturday before the matinee. Its outline had been painted black by a man called Teddy, who drank, and his line wandered near the tail where he'd lost his nerve.

You traced it again with a steel rule and a sable brush, following the curve from the tail up over the back to the round blowhole, then down to the smile. Teddy had given it a grin like a shopkeeper's on a Monday. Your mother came out with two mugs of tea and said the council would take it for scrap on Thursday, and that nobody paid good money to see a whale that couldn't sing. She set one mug on the step beside you and went back in without waiting for an answer.
You didn't argue. You dabbed the heart onto the flank where the paint had flaked away, the spot the children always touched for luck, and it came out a shade too bright, the colour of a split lip. You left the eye alone. By dusk the whale looked like something a child had drawn in a hurry and then loved too much to finish properly.
On Thursday the men came with a flatbed and winched it up, and it rolled slowly past the gate with its wheels turning in the air. From the road, the only thing you could still make out was the heart.
