Traditional colour tattoo of a woman's face framed by a flower crown and dark curled hair, placed on the thigh.

Woman with a flower crown on the thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised woman's face with green eyes, full lashes and dark lips, wearing a crown of pink, lilac and yellow flowers with small white dots. Bold black outlines define the face, hair and scalloped white collar, while the hair uses black with grey highlights and the skin tones are softly shaded. The design is centred on the skin, with colour ink dominating the flowers, face and collar.

Dear Nell, the lady's finished at last, though Mr Pryce says I took three days longer than he'd have liked. He wanted her plain, a face on a board that could be read from the pier. I gave her green eyes anyway, because the lamps along the Golden Mile are yellow and I thought a green eye would catch the light and make the crowd look twice.

Every night after the last tram I climbed the scaffold behind the Ferris wheel with my tin of lake pink and a brush worn down to three hairs. The flowers took the longest. Mr Pryce wanted daisies only, but I put in the lilac ones that grow wild on the cliff path by your old house, and yellow for the little star-shaped ones you used to press in your Bible. Then I dotted white pearls through her hair so she'd catch the bulbs when they came on.

The strange thing happened on Thursday. A boy stood at the foot of the ladder until midnight, watching me outline her collar in white scallops. He said she looked like someone waiting for a train that wasn't coming. I told him to go home. He didn't, and when I climbed down with my hands aching he had gone, but someone had left a pressed lilac on the bottom rung, dry as paper.

I've kept it in my breast pocket. Come down at Whitsun and I'll show you the board, and you can tell me whether her eyes look sad or only sleepy.
