Kawaii food tattoos in a nine-image grid

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A grid of nine close photographs shows separate tattoos of smiling kawaii-style food and drink characters, including a hot dog, ramen bowl, donut, milk carton, pineapple, banana and burger, with a dice box and bubble tea among them. Each piece has bold dark outlines, flat bright fills and soft shading, with small speckled dots scattered around many of the designs. The mix of pink, purple, green, yellow and brown ink is set against lightly tanned skin on limbs.

Wind backed round to the north-east again, so the relief boat will not be coming before Thursday, and the milk has turned to cheese in its carton. Mrs Pargeter's crate arrived on Tuesday with everything she thought a man alone on a rock would need, and every item came with a face drawn on it in her wobbly felt tip. The hot dog grins from its paper sleeve. The ramen pot has two pink cheeks. The donut has a smile so wide I have stopped eating it on principle.

The dice are the only things on the island without faces, which is why I keep rolling them. On Sunday I lost the lamp glass to a six and a one and had to climb the gallery in a gale with a rag and a tin of polish, muttering at a bubble tea cup that had somehow ended up on the gallery rail. Last week the pineapple won the kettle. I am not sure the pineapple understood the rules, but it looked very pleased about it.

Last night the banana slid off the shelf and split down the middle. I ate it by lamplight with a spoon, feeling foolish, and it looked up at me the whole time, which I took as a comment on my manners.

This morning I found the burger's paper wrapper folded neatly beside the tea caddy, and on the inside, in her handwriting, a message: Keep the light going, Mr Ashdown, and eat something green. I have drawn a face on the lamp in reply. It is smiling. The boat can take it back on Thursday, if the wind allows.
