Never Grow Up Neverland tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo spans the side of the torso and combines black script reading never grow up with black silhouettes of a flying figure, a small companion and a trail of stars. Below, a green island with a rocky, jagged coastline and a small rose-like mark is shaded in layered greens with soft watercolour-style blending. The black linework is bold and clean, and the coloured island anchors the lower part of the composition.

The island would not hold still on the chart, and Mrs Oddie had stopped apologising for it. Each morning the green wash she laid down for the coast had drifted a finger's width north, so the jagged headland crept closer to the margin where her pencil notes waited. She blamed the damp in the Whitby loft, the bad glue, the sea air that made her paper cockle like a wet bread crust. Her grandson Tom blamed the island itself, which he insisted was alive and sulking.

She inked the outline anyway, a fine sable brush dipped in sepia and bled with a drop of lamp black, working from the crags down to the little rose-shaped mark where the cove lay hidden. The brush kept catching on the paper's grain as though something were tugging the other way. When she finished, she pinned the sheet to the sill to dry and went down for tea, and when she came back the window was open and the pins were on the floor.
The stars she had dotted above the coast in graphite were gone from the chart. They had lifted off the paper in a loose line and crossed the room, pale specks settling on the sill, the bedpost, the brass rim of the lamp, as if someone had been walking carefully from the page to the open window and back again. Tom stood in the doorway, holding his tea, and asked her, very seriously, whether she meant to draw the second star.
She did not answer him. She fetched a clean sheet and a fresh sharpened pencil, and began to draw the sea.
