The runner beans had gone stringy on the far row, and Dad blamed me for leaving them a day too long. I stood in the mud with my bucket and argued that beans were like children: you had to catch them the minute they were ready or they turned on you. He laughed so hard he had to sit on the water butt, then tapped the shed door, where the paint had weathered to a ghost, and told me the twine was in there where it had always been.

The little red-tipped leaf by the compost bin was his, really. Every April it came up on its own, a green heart with a blush at the edges, and he'd crouch beside it with his trowel and say it was the only thing on the plot with any sense, because it knew when to stay small. He never once pulled it. He'd just wink and say that was the secret of a good allotment: keep one thing wild and let it show you the way.

Last autumn the council gave the plot to a man with a van and a wife who wanted a patio. I went up on the Saturday to see what was left, and found the water butt cracked, the bean poles stacked for firewood, and the shed door bare. The sorrel was still there under the nettles. I knelt in the wet and worked the root out with my fingers, and it came up whole, the red still bright at its tips.

It sits in a chipped pot on my windowsill now, in a flat with no garden at all. Each morning I give it a sip of water and tell it the things he used to say over the beans, mostly rubbish, and I've noticed I sound exactly like him.
