Black outline lettering spelling NICE, one letter on each finger of a hand, in a lettering style with ornate, decorative letterforms.

NICE lettered across four fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is held up towards the camera with a single black outline letter tattooed on each of four fingers, spelling the word NICE from left to right. The letters use thin, decorative outlines with unfilled interiors and some ornamental detailing, and the ink is dark blue-black with no colour. The shallow focus and warm, pinkish filter soften the background, which is a red and white blur.

Dear Tom,

The big wheel's sign went under the tea urn wagon at Doncaster, so I've been up a ladder since Tuesday repainting the lettering. Mr Harrow wanted the old Victorian capitals, all hairline and hollow, the sort you can only do with a sable and a steady wrist and too much tea. I did the top line in gold leaf and it looked like a bank. He said the crowd would think we'd gone posh. I told him the crowd wouldn't read anything above waist height after the second pint.

Here's the odd bit. Four of the boards were cracked clean through, so I had to cut new letters from ply and paint them outline only, to save paint. The lads in the ticket booth started calling the sign NICE, because that was all anyone could read from the road: N, I, C, E, the middle two lost behind a tent pole. Mr Harrow thought it was a joke until a woman came to the caravan asking for the man who'd made 'the nice sign', and pressed a shilling into my hand for a cup of tea I never made her.

I'm keeping the spare board in the van. The outline letters are still wet at the edges, and I keep thinking I should have filled them in. But she said they looked like something you'd want to trace on a window with your breath, and I didn't argue.

Write soon. Mind the weather in Hull.

Love, Dot
