Black serif lettering reading #none in a lettering style, shown on a close-up of skin on a limb.

#none lettering in black serif type

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells the word #none in bold, black serif letters, with the hash symbol sitting at the start of the word. The linework is solid and crisp, with the inside of the o showing soft grey shading. The photograph is taken close up in warm, low light against a dark background, so the text fills the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow shut the Carrick road on a Tuesday, and by dusk there were nine of us crowded into the Drover's Rest with one room free and nobody willing to sleep in it. My father stood at the bar with a tin of black paint and a brush no wider than a pencil, and he lettered a word on the chalkboard by the door: #none. I asked him what the hash was for. He said it made the thing official, the way the old carriers marked a sealed bag so nobody could pretend they hadn't seen it.

The lorry driver read it and laughed, then asked for the room anyway. The schoolteacher from Ashby wanted to know whether it meant the cellar was empty, and my father said that was exactly what it meant, and that she could have the last bowl of stew instead. The letters stood square and heavy on that board, the o shaded grey where he'd pressed the brush twice so the ink bled into the grain.

By midnight the stove had burned down to a red eye and the guests had started telling lies about their first cars. The driver bet the schoolteacher a shilling that the road would open by morning. She took the bet, then produced a boiled sweet from her coat pocket and split it with him on the bar, the two of them sucking in silence like conspirators.

At first light the plough came grinding up the lane, and the driver paid his shilling with a flourish. My father wiped the chalkboard clean, but he left the word painted on the wall beside it. When I asked why, he tapped the hash with one finger and said people only ever came back for the sign.
