Note to Self temporary tattoo designs in a packet
Black and grey · Flash
A clear plastic bag holds a card labelled Note to Self with 14 Temporary Tattoos, and several printed sheets are visible inside. The designs are black line drawings of flowers, hand lettering, arrows and a bird, with simple outlines and no shading. The white designs sit against a blurred, brightly coloured background, and the hand holding the bag is visible but no tattoo is on skin.

Nobody reads the notes you leave yourself, Marguerite said, which was why she wrote hers on the backs of takeaway menus and tucked them into the lining of her coat. The sheets she printed for the stall were the same idea, only tidier: a bird with its head tipped as if it were listening, an arrow pointing at nothing in particular, and the letters A, B and C in fat capitals that looked traced around a bread roll. Each packet held fourteen of them, cut from card and sealed in cellophane, with the title written across the top in her own wonky hand.

Bramwell's Market Hall took the first box in March. By June the flowers had gone, the ones with the uneven petals she drew while waiting for the kettle, and a man in a fleece bought the arrows for his nephew because they were, he said, the only tattoos that ever told you which way to go. Marguerite kept one packet back. It sat in the drawer beside the till with a yellow sticky note on top that read: remember to restock the bird.
In August a girl came to the stall with the cellophane slit open and asked why the lettering said ABC when the arrow had clearly been meant for something else. Marguerite took the sheet and turned it over. On the back, in pencil so faint it had almost rubbed away, was a list she had made at two in the morning: milk, stamps, tell Sam, be kinder to the kettle. She had never thought to print the back.
She gave the girl a bird for free and wrote on a menu before the bus came, folding it small: stock more birds, and check the backs.
