Nut and bolt tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand holds a dark wooden skateboard against a plain pink backdrop, with the forearm extending to the right edge of the frame. On the forearm is a small tattoo of a hexagonal nut and a bolt, drawn in thin black outline with light shading. The tattoo is in black and grey, and the composition is centred on the skateboard with a clean, minimal look.

Ruth found the bolt under the trestle table at twenty to three, when the speeches were already running late and the caterer was stacking chairs with a noise like a dropped tray. It had rolled out of a biscuit tin marked BITS in her brother's careless capitals, along with a single hexagonal nut that had no business being there at all.

Dev had built the board himself over one wet winter in his lock-up behind the chip shop, using walnut he'd bought off a man in Stroud who sold timber from the back of a van. He had promised it to the groom as a wedding present, and the groom had promised to ride it down the hall ramp for the photographs. Nobody had told Dev that the front trucks needed four bolts, not three, and now the thing sat on a chair by the fire door with one hole bare while the best man pretended not to look at it.
She crouched beside it, pinched the nut between finger and thumb, and threaded the bolt through with the patience of someone who had spent her childhood sorting hardware on a workshop bench. The wheels turned once, freely. Outside, a car horn leaned on itself for a while and then gave up.
When the groom's grandmother came over to ask what the fuss was about, Ruth held the board up for her to see: pale light from the window, the dark knot in the grain like a closed eye. The old woman studied the fresh bolt, then the bride laughing across the room with her shoes in her hand, and said, "Well, somebody remembered the fourth one." Ruth tucked the tin back under the table, where it would wait for the next thing that needed fixing.
