Ohana lettering with heart on foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a textured grey carpet, with a small black tattoo on the inner side of the foot near the ankle. The tattoo shows the word Ohana in a handwritten-style script with a small outlined heart to its left. The thin, even linework is solid black with no shading or colour, and the tattoo sits off-centre in the lower half of the frame.

The hatch was stuck at a slant, and Mirela had been levering at it for forty minutes when the reserve tank in her suit began to hiss its warning. Behind the bulkhead the drifting cargo ring turned on its slow axis, and somewhere past the sealed door Tomas was still calling her name over the channel, his voice thinning with each relay.

Her grandmother had taught her the word on a cracked slate in the Kaimana dome, back when the colony still had a school that met under the lamps. Ohana, the old woman had said, means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. Mirela had thought it was a kind thing to tell children. She had not understood it was a rule until the Halewai lost its second reactor and the crew had to count their own heads at the start of every shift.

The bulkhead gave with a shriek. Inside, the ring was dark except for one strip of emergency light, and in its glow she found Ibrahim, the ship's old cook, wedged against a storage rack with his hand clamped around a child's wrist. Nobody had told her there was a child aboard. The boy looked at her with the flat calm of someone who had already decided not to cry.

She hauled them both through the gap and counted on the channel, three heads, then four, then five, and the old word came out of her mouth before she could think about it. Tomas laughed thinly through the static and said she sounded just like her grandmother. Mirela pressed her gloved palm flat against the cold hull beside the hatch and kept it there a moment longer than she needed to.
