Ohana word and arrow on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo of the capital letters OHANA, with a thin arrow running through the lettering from feathered fletching on the left to an arrowhead on the right. The linework is uniform and black, with no shading or colour. The sepia toned close up shows the inner wrist and part of the hand, with the tattoo centred across the skin.

Sit nearer the fire, the lot of you, and mind the coal dust on your sleeves, because I'm telling this the way my grandad told it to me, and he never lowered his voice for anybody. Up at Penrhiw the old shaft had a rule nobody wrote down. When the cage came up, the banksman counted heads, and if the count came short the whole village stood at the pithead until it was put right. Nobody asked whose blood you were. They asked whose you were.

Then came the autumn of the roof fall, when Dai Pritchard and two of the Carrow lads were cut off on the lower level with the water rising. The rescue men dug from the top for three days. On the fourth, a boy of fourteen called Ifan Morgan went down the ladder with a length of string tied round his wrist and a stub of chalk in his pocket. He had no kin in the valley. The Pritchards had taken him in off the coast road after his mother died, and he owed them nothing but his keep. He chalked an arrow on every timber he passed, pointing the way the men would have to come. He wasn't blood to any of them. He went anyway.
They found the three of them on a dry ledge, the Carrow lads singing hymns to keep the dark off. Nobody was left behind. His mother had kept a tin-backed book of island songs, and the word she'd sung most was ohana, which she told him meant family, the kind you choose and the kind that chooses you back. He never forgot it.
The chalk arrow is still on the timber at the bottom of Penrhiw, and if you go down with a lamp you'll see it pointing home.
