Ohana script lettering on skin
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the word Ohana written in flowing, joined black script across the skin. The linework is medium weight and even, with the capital O and the letters h, a, n and a sweeping through each other. The tattoo is in black ink only, and the close framing shows fine skin texture and creases around the design.

The 06:12 is nineteen minutes late, and you have read your aunt's envelope so many times on the bench at Dunmere Junction that the creases have gone soft as cloth. Her handwriting runs on without lifting the pen, each letter tangling into the next, so the word on the front reads less like a name and more like a knot she tied for you on purpose. Ohana, she wrote, and underlined it twice, the way she underlined everything she thought you would forget.

Mrs Pell from the buffet trundles out with a tea urn and asks whether you are going or staying. You tell her you have not decided, which is the truest thing you have said all week. Pigeons work the wet tiles. A signal clacks somewhere past the bridge, and the rails begin to hum the way they do when a train is near enough to be felt through your shoes.
Inside the envelope there is no letter, only a ticket, the return half still attached, and a photograph of the two of you on a harbour wall at Whitby, squinting, your hands clasped as if someone might try to pull you apart. On the back she has written the date you were both sure you would be home by. Beneath it, in the same looping hand, one line: the fare is paid both ways.
The doors slide open. You stand, and the envelope stays in your fist as you walk the length of the platform, past the lamp that never quite lights, and step aboard.
