Dear Mele, the post office in Hilo has lost my parcel twice now, so this goes by the cheap route and you will have to forgive the smudges. Dad's boat is back on the slip at Honokaa. He took the old fibreglass off the hull himself, swearing in two languages, and I held the torch when the light went. Nobody asked you to come home for it. Nobody asked me to stay either, which is the trouble with us.

Uncle Keola asked after you at the funeral lunch, the way he does, sideways, pretending it was about the rice. He said the word about you, the one we used for the cousins who fought over the lychee tree and then carried each other's sleeping children up the hill. You know the one. He drew it on the back of a takeaway menu with a pen that kept skipping, the O looping round and back on itself like a fishing line that has caught something.

I have kept that menu in my jacket pocket. It has gone soft at the folds and the ink has run in the damp, so the H looks like it is melting into the A. I am not sending it because it would not survive the post, and because you would only say it was sentimental, which it is.

So here is the plain part. The boat goes in the water on Saturday. Come if you can. If you cannot, I will leave the second oar in the shed where you will know to look, and the lights on the verandah will stay on until somebody has come up the road.
