The postcard came with a palm tree on the front and a sun the colour of an egg yolk, and Mum held it up to the kitchen window as if the rain might scorch through it. Uncle Ray's handwriting on the back says only "ohana, keep it close", and I've been trying to work out why he'd send that to a man who hasn't been further south than Falmouth.

Remember the harbour wall at Newlyn the night the Kittiwake went out short-handed? Dad stood there with a flask until the lights came round the point, counting the boats the way he counts pennies. He told us once that Ray learned the word on a tuna boat out of Honolulu, where the crew ate from one pan and nobody got paid until everybody did. Family, he said, is the people you don't leave on the slip.

The thing is, you were never going to be left. You've been hauling yourself off that trawler since you were fourteen, and Mum has been reading the shipping forecast like it's a verdict. So I went to the chandler's and bought the fine black ink Ray always used, and I'm sorry to say I've written the word on the inside of my own wrist in biro. It's smudging already, but I know what it says.

Come home when the wind drops and bring the postcard. Dad's been saving the last of the bourbon, and he's pretending he hasn't.
