Black fine line script reading Ohana on the inner forearm near the wrist, with long dark hair visible behind.

Ohana script on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single word, Ohana, written in black script across the inner forearm close to the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering sits horizontally in the centre of the frame. The skin tone is warm and the background is a dark top and long dark hair, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Your aunt Lorna has already lost one shoe under the trestle table when the best man stands up to speak, so you are the one who crawls under the cloth to find it. The marquee smells of cut grass and hot sausage rolls. Somewhere above you the microphone squeals, and a cousin from Auckland laughs at a joke nobody else has heard yet.

The word came from Grandad. He wrote it on the back of every postcard he sent from the harbour, always the same looping letters, always underlined twice. Ohana, he told you once, shelling peas on the back step. It means family, and family means nobody gets left behind. You rolled your eyes and asked for another pea. Now, with the satin slipper hooked on two fingers, the line feels less like a saying and more like a debt.

Back at the table, the chair with Grandad's name card is still pushed in. Nobody has moved it. Lorna's new husband, Dev, is refilling glasses with the careful face of a man who has been told not to cry until the cake. When you hand over the shoe, she grips your arm so hard it hurts and says, 'You always come back for the ones who wander off.' It isn't true, but you let her believe it.

You pull out the chair, sit down in it, and turn the little card so that it faces the room. Then you wait for the speeches to start again, and for the rest of them to find their way back to the table.
