A boy of about nine came along the row holding his mother's umbrella, which kept turning inside out. He stopped at a box of seventies soul and lifted a sleeve as though it might bite him. "Is this one scratched?" he asked. Marion looked. It was. "Okay," she said. "Okay. It plays fine, but I'll knock a pound off." He nodded as if she had signed something important, and she thought of her father, who said okay twice to everything, once to agree and once to make sure you knew he had heard you properly.
When the boy had gone she found the record in her hand again, a worn copy of an album her father used to play on Sunday mornings while he burned the toast. She had not meant to keep it. She put it in the crate beside the till where nobody would find it, then wrote OKAY on a tag in pencil, crossed it out, and wrote it again, smaller, the way he used to sign birthday cards. Then she wrote the price underneath, one pound less, and let the rain do what it liked.
