Dear Tam,

The hut at Gorse Cleugh has a new stove, and Mrs Henderson has stopped asking after the old one. I found your lamp under the bunk where you left it in March, the brass one with the cracked globe. I cleaned the soot off the glass and, turning it to the window, read the words you'd scratched into the base with a nail. Shine on you crazy diamond. You never could quote a line without bending it, but I knew what you meant.

Forty men came up the pass last week on the first fine morning, and every one of them asked me whether the mist had lifted from the col. I told them it had, which was a lie, and they went up anyway. The lamp sat on the table between us the whole time, guttering in the draught from the door, and I kept thinking that a light in the wrong place is worse than none, because it makes people walk towards it.

So I've moved it to the window ledge where the wind can't reach. I've trimmed the wick and filled it with the good paraffin from Ferris's shop. When the cloud sits down on the pass at dusk, you'll see it from the far side of the ridge, the way you always said you would.

Come home by the lower path. Don't trust the cairns above the ford.

Your sister, Ada
