Brother Anselm had never been allowed to speak in the refectory, so when the first heavy snow sealed the pass above Hallmoor, he built his conversation out of it instead. He rolled three bowls of white for the body, pressed two lumps of coal into the top for eyes, and pushed a carrot from the cellar where the nose should be. The abbot found him at dusk with his mittens frozen to the rope and asked what the thing was for. Anselm said it was for waving at the goats.

The snowman stood in the cloister arch through January, arms raised like a man hailing a boat. The novices began leaving it small things: a heel of bread, a candle stub, a folded note in a hand nobody would own up to. Nobody saw it move, and nobody needed to. When the thaw came in March, the abbot ordered it cleared before the Easter procession, and Anselm went out with a shovel and a face like a wet wall.

He did not shovel. He sat on the cold step beside the snowman and talked to it until the bell for matins, about the dead ewe, about the prior's squeaking boots, about the girl from the valley who had brought cheese every Thursday and then stopped coming. The carrot drooped. The coal eyes sank into the slush. By morning there was only a puddle, a grey scarf soaking in it, and the carrot lying in the gutter.

The abbot found the carrot there and, for once, did not ask what it was for.
