The image is a close, straight-on photo of the tattoo against a dark red background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your nephew has been told the carrot is a loan, and he has been very clear that the loan expires at teatime. You are crouched in the yard at Hollin Farm with frost on your gloves, packing the last lump of snow onto a snowman that is already leaning, because the bottom ball is lopsided and nobody has the heart to tell it. Its arms are two bare hazel sticks. Its hair is a single tuft of straw. It has opinions about summer, which it has shared with the hens at length.

"Summer," it says, to nobody in particular, "is a season of warm hugs." It has said this every morning since Tuesday. Your nephew giggles. The hens do not. The old sheepdog, Bess, sits beside the water trough and watches the snowman the way she watches a gate she has been told not to open.

Then the thaw comes early, a wet wind off the moor on Thursday, and you go out to find the snowman sagging like a tired guest. Its carrot is still there, slightly bent. Its bottom ball has slumped into a grey puddle, and Bess has nosed at the stick arms and dragged one of them into the slush. You kneel down anyway. You pick up the carrot and hold it, and the snowman's face, which was always a bit crooked, looks up at you with the same delighted grin it had on Monday.

"Did you see it?" it asks, very quietly. "The sun came out for a whole minute."

You tell it that you did. You put the carrot back on, and you make a promise to build it again on Saturday, bigger, with a proper base.
