Blue genie and magic lamp with quote on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A blue cartoon genie with a red sash and gold armbands curls across the upper arm, its tail trailing down to a gold oil lamp. Bold dark outlines and smooth colour shading define the figure, and three lines of handwritten black script sit beside the tail. The image is a close crop of the arm against a yellow sleeve, with the genie dominating the composition.

The genie had been stuck in the lamp at the back of the Co-op for eleven years, and nobody in Harrowgate Lane had ever thought to ask him what he wanted. Dessie Pryce found him there on a wet Tuesday, wedged between a tin of Bovril and a box of hair dye, and rubbed the brass with the cuff of her good cardigan because it was the only thing she had to hand.

Smoke came out blue and smelling of marmalade. The genie unfolded himself over the crisps display, knocked a packet of ready salted to the floor, and looked at Dessie with the wounded dignity of a man who had been promised a much bigger room. "Three wishes," he said. "Go on. You've got the face for it."
Dessie wanted her husband back from the pit canteen, where he spent his afternoons arguing about football. She wanted the damp out of the front bedroom. She wanted, though she had never said it aloud, to be somewhere other than a village where the slag heap was the tallest thing for twelve miles. The genie listened to all of it with his arms folded and his tail tapping.
"Wish one," she said at last, "is you tell me what you actually want."
He stared at her. Then he sat down on the lamp, which made it squeak, and laughed until the freezer hummed along with him. "Nobody has asked me that in a thousand years," he said. "I want a cup of tea and a biscuit that isn't stale. Wish two, you can have your husband back from the canteen. Wish three, you fix the damp yourself, love, because I'm not a plasterer."
