Tomas and Giorgio Varga had not spoken since the wall between their fields came down in the March flood. Each blamed the other for not mending it, and each walked the long way to the mill rather than pass the gap. Their mother, Ilona, set two bowls on the table every evening and sat between them without comment, which the village found more unbearable than shouting.

One October the old olive on the boundary, the one their grandfather had grafted, came into fruit so heavy that a limb split under it. The limb lay across the stony ground between the houses. Ilona sent Tomas out with the saw and Giorgio out with a basket, and neither asked why the other was there. By dusk they had cut the broken wood into lengths and sat on the fallen stones with the grey branch between their boots.

Giorgio found a sprig still green at the tip, its leaves pointed and silver underneath, pale as ash. He held it out without looking up. Tomas took it, turned it over, and remembered the boys they had been, stripping leaves to make crowns for the goats. Neither said sorry. Tomas pulled a length of twine from his pocket and bound the split limb back to the trunk, pulling the knot tight with his teeth.

By spring the tree had leafed again and the wall had been rebuilt, stone by stone, with a gap left open for the cart. Ilona still set two bowls on the table. Now she set them on the same side.
