Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised scrolling ornament with leaf-like curls and a rounded body, rendered with bold black outlines. Orange and orange-brown shading fills the forms, with teal accents at the upper edge. The design sits centrally on a limb against a plain skin background, with a faded grey tattoo partly visible at the right edge.

The lift had been out since Easter, so Nell carried the water up herself, fourteen floors with a bucket in each hand, and every evening the orange carp in the stairwell tank watched her pass with the same patient look. Nobody on Ashgrove House had ever seen it eat. The council said the tank had been drained in 1987 and left as decoration, but it was full every morning, cold and clear, with a curl of green weed at one end like a sleeve turned back.

Her gran had told her that a fish in a dry place would grant one thing for each bucket carried to it, provided you said thank you and never asked for more than you could lift. So on the thirteenth landing, red in the face, Nell stopped, set the buckets down and asked for the lift to work again. The water did not ripple. The carp did not move. She picked the buckets up and climbed the last flight with her knees shaking, and said thank you anyway.
In the morning the lift hummed and the doors opened on the ground floor like nothing had ever been wrong with them. The tank was still there, but the water had gone flat and grey, and the carp was gone. On the bottom lay a single scale, orange with a black rim, curled at its tip like a leaf pressed in a book, and at its edge a teal flake that caught the light from the stairwell window.
She kept it in the biscuit tin with her gran's ration books. Now when the lift sticks between floors, Nell fills a bucket at the kitchen tap, carries it up the stairs anyway, and tips it into the empty tank on the landing, and says thank you to nothing at all.
