The coneflowers had gone over in the bottom field, and Edie Marsh stood among them with a paper bag in each hand, counting. Her brother used to say she counted things when she was frightened, and she was not frightened, only tired of the wind taking the seed before she could catch it.

Each head had a dark, rounded centre like a little crown, and when she pulled one close she could see the seeds set in curving rows that met in the middle, a pattern so exact it looked drawn with a compass. Her grandmother had called it the wheel. Edie had thought it was simply how things grew until the spring she tried to draw it herself and found her pencil could not make a circle without a triangle hiding inside, pressing to get out.

She carried the heads back to the potting shed, laid them on newspaper under the bulb, and sorted the seed by size with a teaspoon. The orange petals had dried to the colour of old marmalade and crumbled at a touch. Nobody came down the lane that afternoon. Her neighbour's dog barked twice and gave up.

By dusk she had four jars labelled in careful capitals and one left over. She set it on the windowsill facing the field, where the last of the light caught the green in the crown of seeds, and left it there for whoever came looking for the wheel next year.
