Origami crane on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A geometric origami crane is drawn in thin black outline across the forearm, with its folded wings and head clearly defined. Soft pink, purple and blue watercolour splashes sit behind and around the bird, with a few small dots scattered nearby. The tattoo is centred on the arm against a plain, pale background.

Dear Nell, The first batch is in the proving cabinet and I have a minute before Mr Okafor wants the rye out, so I'm writing this on the back of a flour sack. Don't laugh. The sacks are the only paper left in the bakery since the invoices went digital, and I've been folding them into cranes because my hands need something to do while the dough rests.

The first one came out lopsided, wings like a bent envelope. Your gran's trick, the one you taught me on the bus, was to crease every fold twice before you trust it. So I've been doing that at the bench between shapings, and by Tuesday I had eleven on the windowsill above the sink. Mr Okafor says they look like a flock that's been stood up. He's pleased, though. I can tell from how he keeps moving them to the sunny end.

The colour came from the back kitchen. Beetroot water for the pink, blueberry skins steeped overnight for the purple, and the blue from a spoon of red cabbage that Ruth swore would turn to ash on the paper but didn't. I flicked it on with a pastry brush, so there are splashes behind each one like someone's paint jar tipped at dawn. The sky goes grey over the car park about then, and the splashes look almost like light coming through.

I'm sending you the last one, folded from the sack with the Kettering address on it. Hang it where you'll see it at breakfast. Bring the good scissors when you come on Saturday and I'll show you how to fold the head so it doesn't droop. Tell your mum the loaf she asked for is in the freezer. Love, Sam.
