Origami crane with small flowers on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A fine black linework outline of a folded origami crane sits on the upper back, with its wings and body drawn in simple geometric lines. Small outlined flowers and scattered petals in red, green, orange and blue arc around the crane on the left. The skin is lightly lit against a soft, blurred background with a grey top at the bottom edge.

The paper has to be square before anything else, your grandmother said, and she made you fold the corner over three times before you were allowed to crease it. The harbour at Porthavel was still grey with the early boats. Her hands moved as though they already knew the crane and were only waiting for you to catch up.

By the second winter you could make a crane with your eyes shut, and she had begun to lose the thread of her sentences. She would fold one, stop halfway, and ask whether the ferry had gone. It had gone every morning since before either of you was born. You would tell her yes. The petals came from the cherry tree behind the chandlery, which dropped its blossom onto the bins every April, and she gathered them into her apron pocket like coins she intended to spend later.

In the last week of April she gave you a sheet folded small and tight, the way people fold something they mean to hide. Inside was a crane with its wings opened out, and a note in her looping hand: Send the next one out to sea. The ferry had stopped that morning for good, and the gulls were quiet on the wall. You carried the crane down to the slip and set it on the turning tide, where it bobbed, tilted, and then, against all sense, stayed afloat.

Behind you the cherry tree let go of a handful of petals. They settled on the water in red and green, and you counted them the way she used to, one for every fold you had learned, until the crane was past the moorings and too small to see.
