Ornamental feather design with beads
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A feather hangs from two round beads at the top, with a few loose, trailing plumes on the left. The feather's central shaft and vanes are filled with zigzags, triangles, dots, circles and curling swirls. The fine black linework and grey shading sit on a warm sepia, mottled paper-like background.

Nobody in Clunmere had been up to Harrowcote since the Easter flood took the bridge, so the feather was mine to find. It was lodged in a crack of the chapel window, a long grey plume with two jet beads threaded onto its quill, knocked loose by the wind and caught in the ivy like a bookmark. I took it home in my apron pocket and told my mother it was a jay's, though it was too large for a jay.

Mother knew the steward's hand when she saw it. Old Peverell had cut the vanes of every quill he owned with a penknife, notching zigzags down the shaft, triangles where the barbs split, little dots for each night the garrison kept watch through the winter of the sickness. Twelve years after the last sentry left, the marks were still bright enough to count. Mother traced them with her thumb and said they were not decoration but a ledger, and that a man who kept a ledger of nights was a man who expected to be asked for the total.
I went back up in October with a candle and a sack. In the old armoury, under a fallen beam, I found the rest: a tin box of quills, each with its beads, each with its swirls curling tighter towards the tip. The last one had no zigzags at all. Only a spiral, drawn round and round until the knife had gone through the vane.
I left it where it lay, and I wrote the date on the wall in chalk, the way he had, so the next child up the hill would know the count had stopped on a good night.
