Swirling black fox design on tan
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised fox sits in profile, facing left, with its head turned and its long tail curling round to the front. The body is filled with flowing black swirls and tapering lines, with the tail and ears patterned in a similar tribal-like manner. The fox is rendered in solid black ink against a warm tan, mottled background, with no shading beyond the line pattern.

Dear Mags, the petrol pump on the Carrow road has been quiet since you left, so I have had time to watch the foxes. There is one that comes down off the scrub at dusk, sits on the cattle grid as if it holds the deed, and stares at the lorry drivers as though they are the ones trespassing. Mr Okonjo from the depot calls it the Professor because it never blinks first.

Last Tuesday a Land Rover came in with a bald tyre and a man who would not stop talking about his daughter's wedding. I was filling his jerrycan when the fox stepped out between the pumps, its long tail curling round its feet like smoke that had decided to stay put. The man stopped mid-sentence. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and said his father used to tell him a fox in the road means you have forgotten something. He drove off before I could ask what.
The next morning I found his wallet in the dust, right where the fox had been sitting. I kept it on the counter for a week, and every evening the fox came back to sit beside it, patient as a clerk. On the eighth day the man returned, sunburnt and sheepish, and took it without a word. The fox watched him go, flicked its tail once, and loped off into the scrub.
Write back soon. I have decided I will not send anything to the depot until I know what it wants. Love, Dot
