Ornamental hand tattoo with finger designs
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against a black top and white fur, with dark ornamental tattoo linework covering the back of the hand and extending onto several fingers. The design uses curling scrolls, pointed paisley-like shapes and small dotted details. The ink is solid black and the composition is a tight, slightly angled crop with loose hair across the frame.

The pattern was already in the cloth when Mariam died, so I had to learn it from her hands. For forty years she had cut the boteh shapes from card, pointed teardrops that curled at the tip like a sleeping cat's tail, and pinned them to the loom frame with brass tacks while she talked about anyone but the weaving. She never explained the dots. When I asked, she only said, "Those are for the threads that were never dyed," and went back to her tea.

I was sixteen the winter the vats in the courtyard froze. We boiled walnut husk and indigo in copper pans and carried the skeins in with our sleeves rolled up, and the wind came over the wall from the salt flats while I worked each dot with a bone point. Buyers from Shiraz and Yazd wanted their shawls before the caravans left. Every one of them ran a thumb along the border looking for a fault, the way you feel a cut for the sting.
In the last week of the thaw, Khanum Azar came back with a shawl she had bought in the autumn. She held the corner to the lamp and said the paisley pointed the wrong way, toward the door, as if the weaver were leaving. I knew that shawl. Mariam had woven it the winter her left hand began to shake, and she had made me sit beside her and count the knots aloud.
That night I unpicked the border by lamplight and found the dots had been worked in pairs, one pair for every thread Mariam had dyed twice to save the cost. I rewove the points so they curled inward, toward the middle of the cloth. By morning the shawl lay on the frame like a hand closed around something it meant to keep.
