Ornate bird head with eye on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A stylised bird head with a crest of layered, mandala-like feathers and a single open eye sits centrally on the lower leg. The design uses bold solid black fills, fine dotwork accents and patterned scale-like shading across the head and tail feathers. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a plain grey background, with the trailing feathers tapering downwards.

Marta had counted the boats back in through the sound for eleven mornings, and on the twelfth the rooster on the chapel roof did not crow. Instead it sat on the ridge with its crest lifted, staring out past the breakwater with the single round eye it had carried since the storm that took the old pastor. Nobody on Scarra had ever seen it blink.

Her father said the bird was only a bird, and that a rooster with one eye in its crest was a sign of nothing except bad feed. But he had stopped going down to the slip before light. He mended nets at the kitchen table instead, his hands moving through the knots without looking, the way he did when he was listening for something.

On the thirteenth morning Marta climbed the chapel steps with a bucket of barley and found the bird waiting, its feathers stacked in rings like the pattern on a tide chart. She set the grain down. The bird lowered its beak, took one seed, and turned its head so the eye fixed on her. Out past the breakwater, a dark shape was pushing through the fog, low in the water and listing to one side.

She ran. By the time she reached the slip the sun had cleared the headland and the rooster's voice came rolling over the roofs, loud and certain, calling every hull home by name. The boats came in one by one. Her father's was last, and he stood in the stern and lifted his hand to the chapel, where the bird had spread its tail feathers like a fan of black lace against the light.
