Ornate carriage and heart on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large ornate carriage sits on the upper arm, with a heart in the centre of its round body and scrolled filigree details around it. Fine black linework outlines the design, with small dots and coloured jewel-like accents in orange, blue and red. The tattoo is shown in soft sunlight against a warm background, with the subject's face out of frame.

The lost property office at Harrowgate Junction smells of wet umbrellas and the satsuma peel someone always leaves on the radiator. You have been its only clerk for eleven years, so you know the shelves better than your own kitchen, and nothing on them has ever looked like the parcel that arrives on a wet Tuesday in October, wrapped in a bus timetable and tied with ribbon the colour of a cherry drop.

Inside is a carriage no longer than your palm. Its gilt has dulled to the brown of stewed tea, but the filigree still curls around it like frost on a window, and set into the round body is a heart cut from black enamel. Little jewels glint along the roof in amber, sapphire and red. Tucked beneath the wheels is a card with no name, only a platform number that does not exist. The station has eight platforms. Everyone knows that.
You are still turning the card over when the clock above platform four begins to strike, though it is twenty past three. The brass carriage grows warm in your palm, and the hum in the rails rises to meet it. You carry it out onto the cold concrete and set it down on a bench beside a platform that is not there. The wheels turn once, then twice, and the carriage rolls off the edge of the bench and along the empty line, leaving a thread of coloured sparks behind it like a fuse burning slowly toward the dark.
The next morning there is a new slip on the lost property shelf, written in your own handwriting, asking for the return of one small carriage. You do not remember writing it. The ribbon is gone from the parcel, and the heart has been left on your desk, still warm.
