Geometric cat head with red bow on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A stylised cat head with pointed ears sits on the forearm, rendered in angular grey and black facets with amber eyes and a white muzzle. A red polka dot bow is tied beneath the chin, and the ears are shaded in red and pink. The dark starry background contrasts with the pale skin around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shop smelled of cold glue and cut card, and the cat walked in off the wet street as though she had been expected. Mr Abney, who cut silhouettes for the Saturday market in Saltcombe, took one look at her and reached for his angled blade. To him she was all planes, grey facets lifted out of the lamplight, with amber where the glow caught the glass of her eyes. "Don't move," he said. "You are nearly finished."

She did not move. She had learned that from the sea, which moved for everything and so was never caught. The bow came last, a length of red cotton bought from a widow's stall for a penny, and he tied it beneath her chin in a knot that would not slip. White dots ran along it like coins dropped down a stair. Cut card does not usually hold a bow, but he was stubborn, and so was she.

When the market opened she sat on the counter among the finished portraits of drowned sailors' wives and maiden aunts, pleased with her own sharp edges. Customers stopped to look. A boy asked whether she was real. Mr Abney said that was the wrong question to put to a cut thing, and he refused every offer for her, because he had never once been able to say why he kept her.

At closing she slipped off the counter, padded out under the lintel and left the door open to the rain. In the morning there was only a grey shape on the step, its edges softened by the wet, and the red bow lying untied in the gutter, its dots bright as a row of small, deliberate lights.
