Sphynx cat in an ornate frame on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A hairless sphynx cat looks out from an ornate oval frame with scrollwork and gemstones at the top and bottom. The cat's wrinkled skin and pale eyes are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, in greys and black. The design fills the thigh, with denim shorts visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The innkeeper's widow at Gallow Pass hung the portrait over the bar the winter the road closed. It was a gilt oval with garnets set at top and bottom, and inside it sat a hairless grey cat that had belonged to a carter who never came back over the pass. Nobody in the valley would take the frame down, because the cat's pale eyes followed whoever counted the coins.

Snow came in October and stayed until March. The travellers stranded at the inn grew restless. A tinker named Hesketh Vane, who had sold pegs and ribbons at every fair from Kendal to Hexham, laughed at the portrait and said a cat with no fur had no business looking so proud. That night he counted his money on the bar, and the frame gave a small creak. In the morning his purse was empty, and the cat's mouth seemed to have pulled a little tighter at one corner.

The widow, Agnes Corrie, said nothing about it. She set a saucer of cream on the sill beneath the frame and told the guests that the cat wanted what was owed. Over the weeks they put back what they had taken, one coin and one brass button at a time, until the cream was gone each morning and the purse was full again.

When the thaw came and the road opened, Vane walked out with his pegs and his pride a good deal lighter. Agnes wiped the glass with her apron, and the garnets caught the first sun through the window. The cat kept its pale eyes on the door, waiting for the next man who thought himself too clever for a cat in a frame.
