Small ornate elephant on a shoulder

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant facing right, with its trunk curled up, is covered in ornamental patterns including mandala-like circles, dots and lines. The outline and fill use fine black linework, with the elephant set in the centre of the shoulder. The background is a soft, blurred view of buildings and greenery, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Inspector Nadia Pell had searched four hundred suitcases that week, and most of them held nothing but socks and bad news. The man at window six had a small elephant carved from teak wrapped in a tea towel, its back covered in dots and rings, and he kept touching the trunk as if to check it was still curled.

"Forty years old," he said. "My mother's. She carried it out of the valley when she was nine, and she never once let it go in a bag she was not holding herself." Nadia turned it under the lamp. The rings on its flank had been burned in with a needle, hundreds of them, each one a little different, and she found herself counting them the way she counted stamps in a passport.

The declaration form asked for value. Nadia wrote "nil" and then stopped, because a thing with that many circles in it could not be nil. She asked what the dots meant. He said his mother had never explained. Each mark was a day she had got through, or a name, or nothing at all. She had simply decided that an elephant ought to be covered in the things you did not want to forget.

Nadia stamped the form and slid the elephant back under its cloth. "It is not for sale," he said. "I didn't ask," she replied, and she watched him walk out into the grey light of the crossing with the small animal held against his chest, as though it might still be counted.
