Ornate floral lettering design in fine ink

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A large, swashed calligraphic letter is drawn in black ink on white paper. The thick stroke is densely filled with flowers, leaves, ferns and feathers, while the hairline outlines and swirling terminals are rendered with fine lines and dotted stippling. The piece is monochrome and sits centrally, with a quartz crystal cluster and a Pigma Micron pen in the top corners.

Snow had shut the pass for nine days when the carrier left the letter at the Three Stiles, pressed flat under a stone so the wind would not take it. Mother Ilse said it was not for the inn, nor for anyone who had paid for a bed, so Marta should put it on the shelf above the salt and wait.

She did not wait. On the tenth night she lit the second lamp and unrolled it on the scrubbed table. Inside was only a single capital A, drawn as large as a hand, its thick stroke left empty, and beside it a note in a careful hand: Fill what the frost has taken.

So Marta filled it. She put in the ferns that grew under the north wall in summer, the goose feathers she had kept in a jar, the flowers she had pressed between the pages of the psalter. She drew each one with her finest nib, until the stroke grew as dense as a thicket. The hairlines she made slow, and at every turn she set a single dot, the way her grandmother had taught her to end a line so the ink would not run. By the ninth hour the lamp had burned down twice and the wind had dropped.

At first light the road opened, and a rider came up the switchback with a second sheet. It bore the same A, with one small curl left bare at its foot. Under it was a line in the same careful hand: Leave that one for the thaw. Marta pinned the sheet beside the salt, and by noon the dots along the long swash had begun to run downhill with the meltwater.
