The sample tray has been frosting over since the third watch, and you breathe on the glass to clear it so you can count the leaves again. Four is what the log says. Four is what the grandmother plant gave the botanists of Dunmore Station before the reactor cooled, and the grafts have carried that number through eleven generations of hydroponic racks. Everyone else on the ring grows three, the way the old texts prescribe. You are supposed to be checking the nutrient film, not the clover, but your hand keeps going back to the tray.

Yesterday a child from the lower hab pressed her face to the viewport and asked why the plant had so many curls, like the lace on a collar. You told her the curls were the plant's way of holding onto light, which is what your own teacher told you. It was a lie you had repeated so often that it had worn smooth. The truth is the curls were drawn by hand, in a workshop in a city that no longer has a surface to stand on, by someone who wanted a lucky thing to outlive the people who loved it.

So this morning you do the thing the manual forbids. You cut a single stem, wrap it in wet paper, and slide it into the pocket of your jacket against your ribs, where the warmth of the corridor can keep it alive. At the airlock you hesitate, then pass your badge over the reader and walk out toward the grey drift of the outer ring, where the seed drones wait to carry what is left of the old world into the dark. You don't know what the clover will do out there. You only know that four leaves is a number worth keeping.
