Ornate hot air balloon design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hot air balloon is drawn in black linework, with its envelope decorated by scalloped bands, lace-like panels and a central oval medallion. Fine lines form the suspension ropes and basket, with scattered dots adding texture. The design is shown in black ink on a pale background, centred in the frame with the edges of the paper visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the balloon went up over the Tonopah road at six this morning and I am still picking grit out of my collar. Uncle Desmond insisted on the lace panels his mother stitched for the county fair in 1958. I told him the envelope would be too heavy to lift, and he said the heat does the lifting, not the cloth. He was right about that much. The scalloped bands caught the first sun and looked like a cake iced by someone with more patience than sense.

The ropes sang when the burner roared, a thin high note that set the dogs off at the petrol station. The basket swung under our two weights and the sandbags, and the dots of ink on the suspension lines shivered like dust on a spider's web. Below us the road ran white and straight towards the Sierra, with a single truck crawling along it like a bead on a thread. Desmond didn't speak for the first hour. He just kept his hand on the oval medallion in the middle of the envelope, the one with the ring of beads around it, as if he were checking it was still there.

When the wind finally settled us over the dry lake, he tapped the medallion and told me it was never meant to be solid. His mother cut it out, so you could look through the cloth and see where you were going. I laughed at him, and he didn't mind. Then he pointed through the gap, and there was the whole valley, folded small and bright in the oval, with us floating in the middle of it.

I'm posting this from Barstow, where we come down in an hour. Tell Mum the balloon is fine and the old man is happier than I've seen him in years. Save me a plate of something hot. I'll bring the photographs.

Love, Jo
