Ornate mandala elephant on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A raised-trunk elephant is filled with dense, symmetrical ornamental patterns of circles, dots and scrolling lines. The work is entirely in black ink and grey shading, with bold outer contours and fine interior detail. The elephant is centred on the shin, with the trunk curling up toward the top of the frame and the feet near the ankle.

You are on your knees in the dry basin at Hollin Court, scraping green slime off the stone elephant with a bent teaspoon, because Mrs Abney wants the fountain running before the vicar comes on Saturday. The beast stands on the lip of the pool with its trunk lifted high, as if calling someone in from the far lawn, and every inch of its flank is cut with rings, dots and scrolling lines that the old mason must have laboured over for a whole winter.

Nobody has turned the tap on in eleven years. The plumber from Diss said the pipe was sound and the trouble lay in the spout, so you unscrew the brass nozzle and find it packed with grit, a dead wasp and a wad of damp paper. Tucked inside is a note in pencil, the letters gone brown: the circles are not decoration, it says, they are the stations of the garden. Count them from the trunk and you will find where the water is meant to rise.
Nine rings on the shoulder, then the tendril scroll, then four dots in a diamond. You walk the paths with the note in your pocket and find the matching marks where they should be: a sundial with nine gnomon lines, a bench carved with the same diamond, a gate whose iron curls mirror the trunk. By the time the light turns orange over the orchard you have a route, and you know which flagstone in the fourth bed hides the valve.
Next morning you turn the valve on your knees, the way the note says, and wait. For a long moment there is only the groan of old pipe. Then water climbs the trunk in one bright rope, spills from the tip and drops back into the basin with a sound like someone laughing in the next room. Mrs Abney, at the kitchen window, sets down her cup.
