Ornate owl design in red linework
Geometric · Colour · Flash
A front-facing owl is drawn in red line on white, with a symmetrical head, round eyes with radiating detail, and layered feathers. The wings and belly are filled with spirals, diamond shapes and scale patterns, while the lower feathers end in teardrop shapes. The design uses a single red ink with no shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Aunt Marjorie, the barge is tied up below the lock at Fenmore now, and the owl has taken to sitting on the chimney pot as though she paid the coal bill. I know you said barges were no place for a bird, but she came aboard in March with a wing torn at the joint and Mr Halloran swore she'd never fly right again. She flies fine. She just prefers the roof.

Every evening she turns her head in those slow, deliberate quarters, the way you used to turn the pages of the Radio Times, and checks the water. The rings of her eyes catch the lamp from the lock-keeper's cottage and throw little red sparks across the cabin wall. Mr Halloran says they're the same colour as the paint on the gunwale, and he's right, which annoys me, because I'd been meaning to tell him that myself.
The spirals on her breast are the thing I can't stop looking at. Each one ends in a tight curl, like the coil of rope on the stern, and last Tuesday I counted forty-one before I lost my place and had to start again. The diamonds down her wings look like the lock gates when the light goes through them. I'm writing this at the table with the stove going and she has just dropped a feather onto the sill, long and pointed, with a bead of ink-dark tip. I've put it in the envelope for you. Don't tell Mum I've started keeping things.
Write back soon. Tell me whether you think the lock will open before the frost, and whether the owl can be trusted to find her own way down when the water rises. I think she will. I think she has been finding her own way down all along.
