Pen drawing of an ornate oval frame made from acanthus leaves and scrolls in brown ink on a grey background, shown as a tattoo design with no body placement.

Ornate scrolled oval frame design

Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical oval frame built from acanthus-style leaves, curling scrolls and a ribbon-like band at the top, with a crest of leaves above. The linework is fine and the leaves are shaded with cross-hatching and stippling in brown ink. The empty centre leaves room for a portrait or lettering, and the design is centred on a plain grey background.

The frame arrived in three pieces, wrapped in a bedsheet that still smelled of the river. Mrs Adeyemi wanted the acanthus leaves cleaned and regilded before Thursday, and she was clear that the oval must stay empty. Her husband had carved it himself over one winter in the boat shed, she said, and he had never once put a face in it.

I worked at the bench under the north window, stripping the old size with a warm swab and easing the curls back into line with a hooked tool. The scrolls were cut deeper than any shop would bother with. Every leaf had its own fine hatching, like hair, and where the shading thinned I found pencil lines under the gilt, a second drawing that had been meant to be the first. He had planned the ribbon at the crest twice, then kept both.

On the Wednesday night I held the last section to the lamp and saw that the inner edge was not a true oval. Along the lower curve, where the leaves turned under like small waves, he had cut a groove the width of a thumb. In it lay a folded slip of paper, dry as a pressed leaf, with a tide time written in pencil and four words: come home by the ebb.

I gave the frame back on Thursday, polished and sharp in the gold. Mrs Adeyemi turned it over, then stood it on the mantel without glass or picture. She looked at the empty middle for a long time. Then she moved the lamp so the afternoon light fell through the oval and onto the wall, where it made a pale shape that moved all day.
