Ornate teapot with pink steam and flowers
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A coloured drawing of an ornate teapot with a gold-trimmed handle, spout and base, and a patterned lid. Pink flowers with green leaves decorate the body, and the spout releases a curling pink cloud of steam. Bold dark outlines, dotted detail and soft shading are set against a mottled beige background.

The envoy from Vessary arrived before the kettle had properly boiled, and Mistress Oriel Quill sent me down to the scullery with orders to make the Teapot of Lissantry sing. I had mended its spout twice that winter, and both times the steam had come out grey and sullen, the colour of a wet sparrow. Queen Mirenda would not have grey steam in her audience hall.

So I did what my grandmother taught me, which was to leave the leaves to steep in the dark longer than any sensible person would, then add a pinch of dried rose petals from the walled garden, the ones kept for funerals and weddings. I set the lid on, bound the cracked gold handle with waxed thread, and waited. The copper base ticked. Somewhere above me a door slammed and a bell rang twice.
When I carried the pot up the back stairs, steam was already spilling from the spout in soft pink curls, lifting and folding over themselves like a bolt of silk being unrolled. The envoy stopped mid-sentence. He had spent forty years in Vessary's grey harbours, and he stared at that cloud as though someone had handed him a letter in his own mother's hand.
The Queen poured him a cup without a word. He drank, wiped his moustache, and said the treaty could be signed by dusk. Mistress Quill later told me the envoy had never once seen Lissantry's steam in summer, and that the blossoms meant a truce, not tea. I have never corrected her, though the petals were only what was left in the tin.
